July 4th is a time for celebration, but it’s also a day when accidents (especially involving fireworks, heat, and kids) can spike.
Here are practical, friendly tips for a safe and fun Fourth of July:
✅ Plan Ahead
Know the schedule for local fireworks displays and arrive early.
Set a meeting point in case anyone gets separated.
Check event websites for safety rules (e.g. no outside fireworks, no grills, etc.).
✅ Stay Hydrated
Bring plenty of water—especially in Phoenix’s heat.
Avoid too much alcohol if you’re outdoors in the sun.
✅ Dress for the Heat
Wear light, breathable clothing and sunscreen (reapply every 2 hours).
Bring hats, sunglasses, and portable fans or cooling towels.
🎆 Fireworks Safety
(Even sparklers burn at 1,200°F—hotter than a blowtorch!)
Attend public shows instead of using fireworks at home (especially in AZ where it can be dry and dangerous).
If using legal fireworks at home:
Always have water nearby (bucket or hose).
Light one at a time, and never relight a dud.
Keep kids and pets at a safe distance.
Never point fireworks at people, homes, or flammable materials.
🐶 Pet Safety
Fireworks can terrify animals.
Keep pets indoors with music/white noise to mask sounds.
Make sure they’re microchipped and have ID tags—July 5 is the busiest day for shelters.
👧🏽 Kid Safety
Keep glow sticks or LED toys handy so kids feel part of the fun (without sparklers).
If you're at a crowded park or event, put an ID wristband or note in their pocket.
Make sure kids stay clear of grills, fire pits, and fireworks areas.
🚗 Travel & Parking Tips
Do not drink & drive! Have a designated driver or use Uber/Lyft/Waymo.
Expect delays leaving big events—bring snacks, water, and patience.
Use a flashlight or phone light when walking back to your car in the dark.
🧺 Bonus: Picnic/Party Tips
Keep cold food cold: Use coolers with ice packs.
Keep hot food hot: Use foil wraps and insulated bags.
Wash hands or bring sanitizer for BBQs and potlucks.
